Briefing: Audio Wins the Attention Data, Video Wins the Growth
The Podcast Atlas puts fresh numbers on audio's trust premium the same week revenue forecasts credit video for next year's growth. Both are true, and the smart buy holds them together.
The freshest attention research says audio is the medium's superpower. The freshest revenue data says video is where the growth is. If you're buying or selling this month, the interesting work is in holding those together.
The Podcast Atlas puts numbers on the trust premium
Sounds Profitable, working with Signal Hill Insights, fielded the Podcast Atlas among 5,061 users of ad-supported platforms, and audio podcast listeners came out the most attentive, most trusting, and most likely to act on advertising of any group measured. In screen-free moments, audio held attention over video 78 percent to 55. On credibility, 58 percent of audio podcast consumers called the content accurate and factual, against 50 percent for YouTube at large and 36 percent for Facebook. And only 31 percent said they routinely question ad claims they hear on audio podcasts, the lowest skepticism of any platform in the study.
For buyers, this is the trust premium that justifies host-read rates, showing up again in somebody else's data. For podcasters, it's a pitch slide: your audio feed is not the legacy half of your show. It's the attention half.
Revenue keeps climbing, and video is doing the pulling
US podcast ad revenue is on pace to clear $3 billion this year, and Podnews reports forecasts of roughly 20 percent growth next year with video-attached inventory driving most of the increase. Industry benchmark data published this summer found that nearly four in five episodic campaigns now include a simulcast video component, a share that would have sounded absurd two years ago.
Read those together with the Atlas and the picture is not audio versus video. It's that the money follows reach onto the screen while the attention stays in the ear, which is exactly why baked-in reads that travel to both remain the smartest single buy in the medium.
What the desk would do this week
If you're buying: before you shift budget toward video-first packages, ask each show for its screen-free listening share and price the audio side like the attention data says it deserves. If you're selling: put the Atlas credibility numbers in your media kit next to your simulcast stats. You're no longer choosing which story to tell. You have both.
